Life is a Game
This animation was created in Blender by Калин Златански, a Bulgarian media producer and musician, and Athena Zhu. I was asked to create the sound design and mix for the animation. Most of the design process was done during the mixing process. I made this decision because I felt that the sounds would not have benefitted from being not only individually designed, but to be collectively designed as well. Since this animation features two different animations linked together, I wanted to enhance the difference between them, still creating an audio transition which could link them together. Perspective changes and camera movements have been recreated breaking down the automation in multiple stages. For the positioning and volume of the sounds a first layer of automation was written to the sound’s own channel, while a second layer was added because of the camera movement and distance from the source. Automation on Filters have been used as well to recreate the loss in frequency given by a distance source. Volume and panning automation both helped increasing the dynamic range and make the sound be less static. The sounds for the dark-green pieces have been inspired by the Start Wars (Star Wars, 1977.) saga’s droids in order to enhance their apparent digital quality, whereas the sounds for the white pieces were designed in order to enhance comical characteristics. The design focused on differentiating the two groups as much as possible from a character point of view, but not so much from a movement perspective since they still pertain to the same category of objects.
